HOW WHITENING AGENT WORKS

Teeth color defines by combination of natural pigmentation and ‘stain’ molecules being trapped in the microstructure of tooth. These molecules join together to form larger molecules. The larger the molecules are, the darker the teeth appear. Because stains lay under the surface of the tooth, only whitening agent can penetrates the surface and clean the tooth from “inside”.

All whitening gels have peroxide in their ingredients list. Hydrogen peroxide breaks down to water, oxygen, and numerous radicals and byproducts known as ‘bleaching factors’ that lighten teeth.

TEETH WHITENING PROCESS

This involves two important steps: oxygenation and conversion. Oxygenation microscopically disintegrates large, dark molecules and removes them from the tooth structure by diffusion. Conversion helps to break down the dark color molecules as free radicals destroy the chromophore bonds, leaving tiny molecules that appear white because they have no chromophore.

The best whitening results are achieved when whitening gels are fully potent and able to produce a high percentage of free radicals. It’s also important that they be allowed an extended time to diffuse thoroughly into the microstructure of teeth.

Oxygen and water alone are not effective. The potency and effectiveness of whitening agent are determined by the quality of Peroxide. Whitening gels with a low potency are made from Carbamide Peroxide, a very unstable chemicals that quickly decompose once they mixed with saliva. In contrast, highly potent whitening agent made from pure Hydrogen Peroxide which starts to work right away and can stay active for longer period of time. Only Hydrogen Peroxide whitening agent can guarantee effective result.

WHITENING AGENT STORAGE RECOMMENDATIONS

Another factor to keep in mind is that instability is likely to start immediately following manufacturing. Even at room temperature, peroxide gel slowly degrades its potency. This is why consistent refrigeration is so important during all phases of shipment and further storage. Chemical stabilizers lengthen shelf-life, but can result in in less effectiveness and higher sensitizing properties of the whitening gels. The best approach is to use a sensible amount of chemical stabilizers in combination with continuous refrigeration.
